Jasmit’s Family
Jasmit is the man he is today because of his family’s support.
Jasmit Phulka’s love of sports was inherited from his great grandfather, who carried his passion throughout his life by always supporting his children to strive for greatness in any sport they chose to participate in. His son, Jasmit’s grandfather, Gurmeet Singh, was well known for his strong and mighty physicality and sense of self in his village Khakh, in Punjab. Gurmeet Singh was in the Indian army and was also established as a great kabaddi (Punjabi wrestling) player due to his own father’s support.

Jasmit’s father, Harjit Singh Phulka, would go on to follow in his father’s footsteps and continue his legacy by becoming a great kabaddi player himself. He was renowned for picking up a 150kg stone over his head during his own training. Harjit believed in not only training physically, but also focused on being powerful mentally. This is who Jasmit gets his intense focus and dedication to mental exercises in combination with his physical training from. Jasmit Phulka’s father is his biggest motivation in his pursuit of greatness through wrestling. Harjit Singh Phulka worked at a local nursery after he immigrated from Canada. Through learning the ins and outs of the nursery business, he decided to open Maple Leaf Nursery with his brother, which has now become one of the largest growers in Canada.

Harjit, like his family before him, understood the value in his children being involved in sports. Jasmit’s older cousin, Sanjit Singh Phulka, would go on to be a shotput and discus BC medalist numerous times. Jasmit’s younger cousin, Jobanjit Singh Phulka, was also a BC and National medalist and a Cadet Pan American Championship Bronze medalist.
Jasmit’s older brother, Chanmit Singh Phulka, began wrestling at the age of 11. Chanmit went on to become a BC Champion and National Champion wrestler. His list of accomplishments in wrestling include being a Junior Pan American Champion, and winning a gold medal at the Resita International Junior Championships in Romania.

The sacrifices of Jasmit’s parents have allowed him to accomplish and chase his wildest dreams. Jasmit’s grandmother, Shangar Kaur Phulka, used to give him daily massages and motivated him to keep wrestling. She was his biggest fan and always prayed for his success. Jasmit’s parents have left no stone unturned to get him what he needs to support him in any way. His father has always led by example, and has shown Jasmit through his own legacy that anything is possible. Harjit spends hours each week counseling Jasmit – he is his guide and mentor for everything; from his wrestling, to embodying positive traits to become the best man he can be.

Jasmit’s mother Supinderjit Kaur Phulka, has had a lasting role in his career and in his nutrition. She would wake up at 4:00 AM to get Jasmit’s fresh shakes ready for him and continues to ensure he has the best diet and nutrition he requires to be at his optimal level of performance at all times.

Jasmit is forever grateful to his parents, and hopes that one day when he has his own kids, he can provide them with the type of support his own parents have provided him.

Jasmit’s brother, Chanmit, has played a huge role in his life. He is not just his brother, but he is his coach, mentor, best friend, role model, and his manager. He makes sure Jasmit gets all he needs to put all of his energy towards the sport, and is constantly reviewing what Jasmit can do to improve and be the best that he can be. Jasmit cannot underappreciate the priority his brother gives him in his own busy life to make the dream possible; Jasmit always says that he and Chanmit win and lose together. Jasmit is firm in pointing out that without Chanmit, there would be no success in Jasmit’s wrestling career.

Jasmit’s fiancé, Navjit, also plays a huge role in his career. She is always there to support him and push him out of his comfort zone. Navjit is pursuing her dream of becoming a physician and is currently in her second year at the prestigious UBC Medical School. Navjit also has both her Bachelor of Science, and Doctor of Pharmacy from UBC. Together, Jasmit and Navjit look forward to starting a family of their own and guiding their own future children to greatness.

Jasmit looks forward to a new generation and desires to pass the baton to his nephew, Sher Singh Phulka. He is confident that his whole family will provide a new and upcoming generation with all of the love and support they require to carry on the Phulka legacy in the same way that he was given this very opportunity.
